Nintendo and Illumination just gave us our first real look at The Super Mario Galaxy Movie during a dedicated Nintendo Direct broadcast. Serving as the follow-up to the massive 2023 box office hit, this sequel takes Mario far beyond the traditional boundaries of the Mushroom Kingdom and straight into the cosmos. As reported by Polygon, the latest footage confirms that the film draws heavily from the beloved Wii era of platformers, complete with floating planetary platforms, the adorable Luma characters, and classic celestial aesthetics that fans will instantly recognize.
The trailer also brings a few major casting additions to light alongside the returning voice talent. Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, Charlie Day, Jack Black, Keegan-Michael Key, and Kevin Michael Richardson are all reprising their roles. They will be joined by Brie Larson as the cosmic monarch Rosalina and Benny Safdie as Bowser Jr., adding a brand new dynamic to the antagonist lineup alongside a metal-powered threat for Mario and Luigi. Observant fans have also spotted nods to Super Mario Odyssey and Bowser's Fury sprinkled throughout the footage.
This cinematic expansion is landing during a massive milestone year for Nintendo, arriving right on the heels of the original Super Mario Bros. game's 40th anniversary. With Nintendo lining up a busy 2026 release schedule that includes Mario Tennis Fever, a Switch 2 version of Super Mario Bros. Wonder, and a brand new Yoshi platformer, the plumber is once again taking center stage across both streaming and console spaces. The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is officially scheduled to hit theaters on April 3, 2026.
