Ninja Theory Unveils Senua, Expanding the Franchise Into a Full-Scale Action-Adventure Game

Ninja Theory has announced Senua, effectively the third game in the Hellblade series, evolving the franchise into a full action-adventure title with expanded combat, stealth, vertical traversal, and a release planned for next year across major platforms and Game Pass.

Ninja Theory is returning with a third installment in the critically acclaimed franchise, but the studio is dropping the numbering convention for a fresh start. Officially titled Senua, the upcoming release moves away from the strictly linear, narrative-focused structure of its predecessors to embrace a full-scale action-adventure format. Revealed during the Xbox Games Showcase and reported by Eurogamer, the game keeps the intimate storytelling and high production values of the previous titles while introducing deeper gameplay mechanics, broader combat options, and expanded exploration.

Studio head Dom Matthews explained that the team wanted to give players significantly more agency and gameplay variety. The sequel features a vastly expanded combat toolkit that includes multiple weapon types, dual-wielding, throwable items, and focus abilities, alongside dedicated stealth mechanics and complex boss battles.Traversal has also received a major overhaul, featuring increased movement speed, vertical climbing, and a game world that doubles the physical size of the previous entry. Despite the larger scope and interconnected level design, Matthews confirmed that the title remains a linear story experience rather than shifting into an open world.

Set in Senua's unique vision of Purgatory, the narrative follows her quest to heal the wounds of her past and find a path to the afterlife, functioning as a standalone story that newcomers can easily jump into. With a targeted release next year across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, Steam, and Day One on Game Pass, Ninja Theory is aiming for a swift turnaround following their 2024 release. For players who want rich cinematic experiences paired with expanded player choice, this evolution shows a studio willing to shake up its formula without losing its emotional core.
