A new trailer for the upcoming Street Fighter movie showcases iconic moves, a falling out between Ryu and Ken, and a massive ensemble cast featuring wrestling stars and musicians.
Legendary just dropped a fresh look at the upcoming Street Fighter movie, and it gives fighting game fans plenty to dissect ahead of the October 16 theatrical release. The nearly three-minute trailer leans heavily into classic franchise lore while showcasing some surprising live action interpretations of iconic moves. E. Honda makes a strong impression in his signature bath house stage, cleanly pulling off his Hundred Hand Slap and Sumo Headbutt against Ryu before getting sent flying by a Tatsumaki.
The footage also shines a light on an unexpected rift between longtime friends Ryu and Ken. The classic rivalry gets a darker edge here, with Ken admitting he spent years in Ryu shadow and entering M. Bison World Warrior tournament to win it all. Meanwhile, Ryu wrestles with the Dark Hadou, charging up a purple fireball and warning of a growing darkness within. Chun-Li steps in to warn Ryu that Ken is in danger, sparking speculation from the community that the adaptation might be pulling inspiration from the 1994 anime by introducing Violent Ken.
Beyond the core duo, the trailer highlights a wildly eclectic cast that blends traditional actors with major names from sports and entertainment. Cody Rhodes steps into the boots of a much more sarcastic Guile, trading barbs with Andrew Schulz as Dan Hibiki. Wrestling star Roman Reigns makes a brief and imposing appearance as Akuma lifting Joe, played by Alexander Volkanovski, while musicians like Orville Peck and 50 Cent round out the sprawling roster as Vega and Balrog.
As video game adaptations continue to carve out a massive space in modern entertainment, this star studded take on Capcom legendary fighter is shaping up to be a major talking point across social feeds and creator streams. Whether the massive ensemble cast can successfully translate the deep lore of the fighting game community to the big screen will be the ultimate test when the movie finally drops this October.
