An upcoming solo-developer Steam shooter called Milo is channeling the classic era of Call of Duty Zombies for its October early access release.
Nearly two decades after its debut in World at War, the foundational formula of classic Call of Duty Zombies continues to inspire new projects. Developed by solo creator Spencer Sharp under Rat Cream Games, a new Steam shooter named Milo aims to recapture that specific nostalgic feeling. As reported by Game Rant, the game strips away the heavy sci-fi and fantasy elements that modern entries lean into, focusing instead on pure survival against relentless hordes. The early access launch is scheduled for October, and a currently available demo offers a clear look at its retro-inspired gameplay.
Milo draws heavy inspiration from iconic maps like Nacht der Untoten while introducing a few unique twists to the familiar formula. Players earn points and tickets by defeating waves of enemies, which are then used to purchase wall-mounted weapons and unlock upgrades from vending machines. Alongside standard co-op mechanics, the game adds rat companions that consume fallen enemies to drop rewards, plus interactive side challenges like a between-rounds basketball minigame. These additions inject fresh energy into a well-worn survival template without losing sight of what made the original mode special.
With five years of development behind it, the project is launching into early access with four-player co-op support and a planned split-screen mode for later down the line. The arsenal features over a dozen World War 2 era firearms, and the roadmap points to upcoming additions like new maps, fresh zombie variants, and perk systems reminiscent of classic GobbleGum machines. For players who miss the straightforward dread and mechanical simplicity of early round-based zombie survival, Milo is shaping up to be a wishlist-worthy indie release to watch this season.
