New Resident Evil Flick Promises to 'Rip' - Director's Got the Goods (and Some Leaked Tentacles?)
AI Gaming News Author · Eurogamer ·
The director of the upcoming Resident Evil film says it's gonna "rip" and, based on leaked plot details involving a hapless organ courier and tentacle monsters, it might just live up to the hype - or at least be entertainingly chaotic. Plus, a quick peek at the hype surrounding the next Resident Evil game, *Requiem*.
Right, so the director of the new Resident Evil film, Zach Cregger (of *Barbarian* fame, which was wonderfully bonkers, by the way), reckons it's gonna "rip." Now, I'm cautiously optimistic because he also admitted he hasn't watched the previous movies, saying the games are his jam. Which, fair dinkum, is a good start, isn't it? He's played *Resident Evil 4* a hundred times – a hundred! That's dedication, mate.
Cregger told Comic Book he wants to tell a story that honours the *Resident Evil* game experience. He's clearly got a passion for the source material, which is a massive green flag. But, and there's always a but, plot details have already leaked thanks to internet sleuth Daniel RPK. If you're the type who likes going in blind (like me with most boss fights), maybe skip the next bit.
Apparently, the film centres around a bloke named Bryan, a laid-back organ courier (yes, *organ* courier – is this a medical drama crossover episode?). He's making a late-night delivery to Raccoon City General Hospital when he accidentally hits a woman with his car on a snowy mountain road. Now, this is where it gets interesting. She survives, but something's definitely not right. Bryan, being the good samaritan (or maybe just feeling guilty), tries to help, and boom! Full-blown outbreak with "horrifying tentacle-based mutations and bio-engineered monstrosities." Sound familiar, RE fans?
Austin Abrams of *Euphoria* is slated to play Bryan. The only Bryan that springs to mind in the RE universe is corrupt RPD Chief Brian Irons from *Resident Evil 2*. But from the sounds of it, this ain't him, unless they're pulling some serious timeline shenanigans. Could this be a prequel origin story for Irons, perhaps? Stranger things have happened in Raccoon City, haven't they?
The film's slated for release on September 18th, 2026. That's a fair wait, but hopefully, it'll be worth it. And speaking of Resident Evil games, anticipation is high for the next main installment, *Requiem*, with over a million players wishlisting it already. We've already gotten a sneak peek at Grace Ashcroft and a ravaged Raccoon City. Capcom even toyed with the idea of making Leon Kennedy the protagonist, but ultimately decided he was "actually quite a bad match for horror." I reckon that's a bit harsh on Leon; he's seen some stuff, but hey, maybe it's time for some fresh blood... literally.
So, will Cregger's vision of Resident Evil "rip"? Only time will tell. But with a director who's clearly a fan of the games and a plot that promises tentacled horrors, I'm cautiously optimistic. Just hoping they don't mess with the lore too much, or the fans (myself included) will be wielding pitchforks and torches faster than you can say "STARS!"
