New Magic: The Gathering Documentary Puts the Focus on Community Over Cards

A new documentary exploring the community and culture behind Magic: The Gathering is launching a Kickstarter campaign on April 7 to fund its final post-production stages.

For decades, Magic: The Gathering has defined what a physical trading card game can be, spawning global competitive circuits and massive digital ecosystems. Yet a new documentary titled The Gathering is the Magic argues that the true soul of the hobby has always lived away from the digital client and the booster pack. Directed by lifelong player and filmmaker David K. Wilson, the project captures the distinct culture of in-person competitive play, local game store friendships, and the shared experiences that keep players returning across generations.

Filming began in earnest in 2022 as large tabletop events returned following pandemic-related disruptions. Wilson quickly realized that capturing the community meant participating in it directly, stepping away from the sidelines to play in events and connect with judges, artists, and creators on their level. That ground-level approach shifted the documentary's core focus away from rules, mechanics, and set releases, steering the narrative instead toward the human connections forged across folding tables at conventions and Friday Night Magic.

Wilson now has a roughly 75-minute cut of the film complete, but he is turning to crowdfunding to push the project across the finish line. A Kickstarter campaign launches on April 7 with a funding goal of 25,000 dollars to cover additional interviews and high-end post-production work. Backer rewards include exclusive physical loot such as custom playmats illustrated by notable Magic artists including Aaron Miller, Phil Stone, SchmandrewArt, and comic illustrator Jacques Solomon, offering physical collectors a tangible piece of the documentary's journey.
