New Kickstarter Project Aims to Bring D&D to the Youngest Generation of Players

A new Kickstarter campaign called Little But Fierce aims to introduce kids to Dungeons & Dragons through streamlined rules, visual character sheets, and family-friendly gameplay mechanics.

Getting younger family members into tabletop role-playing games usually means dealing with dense rulebooks and complex math that can frustrate even adults. Creator and former educator Sam Nelson Bradshaw is tackling this hurdle with Little But Fierce, a streamlined adaptation of fifth edition rules currently running on Kickstarter through the end of March. According to a report by Polygon, the project stems from Bradshaw's personal mission to build an accessible bridge into the hobby for his daughter, allowing kids to read the rulebook themselves rather than relying entirely on an adult Dungeon Master.

The project redesigns classic mechanics to remove barriers for younger minds. Negative numbers are gone, and ability scores have been simplified to focus purely on modifiers, while stats like Intelligence and Wisdom combine into a single Smarts attribute. Complex narrative elements also receive a family-friendly adjustment. Warlocks are excluded to avoid darker thematic tones, combat is reframed around creative action scenes and escape plans instead of traditional violence, and character sheets rely heavily on visual iconography so even pre-readers can participate alongside older siblings.

Funding from the Kickstarter campaign will expand the book with expanded character options, game master tools, and full artwork. The project arrives as tabletop gaming continues to enjoy a massive cultural resurgence driven by streaming, pop culture, and family bonding. By offering a stepping stone that respects a child's intelligence without bogging them down in intimidating terminology, Little But Fierce could become the go-to entry point for a brand new generation of players.
