New Game Boy Color Action RPG Essencelord Announced With a Playable Browser Demo

Solo developer Tyler Lombard has announced Essencelord, a brand-new action RPG for the Game Boy Color, featuring strict inventory management and a playable web browser demo.

Retro gaming enthusiasts and handheld collectors have a fresh reason to dust off their classic hardware. Game Rant reports that solo developer Tyler Lombard has unveiled Essencelord, a brand-new action role-playing game built specifically for the Game Boy Color. The project draws heavy inspiration from classic top-down adventures, featuring a dual-protagonist system where players choose between a defense-oriented Warrior or a long-range spellcasting Wizard at the start of each run.

What sets Essencelord apart from standard retro revivals is its strict inventory management mechanic. Players cannot hoard items and can only carry five pieces of gear at any given time, turning every exploration phase into a tactical choice about what loot to keep and what to abandon. The game promises a robust feature set for a cartridge title, including multiple regions, boss battles, puzzle-solving, side quests, and a reputation system.

Lombard is currently running a Kickstarter campaign to fund the final stages of development, with physical limited-edition cartridges promised to backers. For players wanting to test the waters before pledging, a browser-based demo is already live on itch.io. The playable build requires no downloads and showcases roughly seventy percent of the content planned for the game's opening region.
