Netflix's new Italian dub for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind is winning over fans by leaning into chaotic 90s-style localization, heavy regional slang, and internet memes.
Anime localizations used to be completely unpredictable wild west territory, giving us legendary quirks like digital sandwiches and rewritten scripts. While the industry has largely shifted toward pristine global synchronization, a recent release is proving that the spirit of chaotic localizations is still alive and well. Polygon reports that Netflix's new Italian dub for JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Golden Wind has gone viral for taking massive creative liberties with the source material, leaning hard into local internet culture, heavy profanity, and regional Neapolitan dialect that never appeared in Hiroiko Araki's original manga.
Directed by Mosè Singh, the voice cast leaned directly into the bizarre nature of the series by injecting improvised slang, internet memes, and explicit jokes into the dialogue. Characters who normally speak with standard composure in the Japanese release now banter like contemporary Italian streaming audiences, transforming scenes into something closer to a community fan project than a traditional corporate dub. While purists might normally push back against such drastic script changes, the community response has been overwhelmingly positive across social platforms, with digital creators clipping and sharing the funniest moments.
This reception highlights a broader truth about modern fandom culture. Because JoJo has always embraced absurdity and generated endless memes, a deliberately chaotic local adaptation actually complements the core DNA of the series rather than fighting against it. It proves that when localization teams take creative risks that align with the community's sense of humor, audiences are more than ready to embrace the unexpected nostalgia of a truly unhinged dub.
