Netflix Is Developing a Live-Action Persona Series With Stranger Things Producers

Netflix is developing a live-action Persona series produced by the team behind Stranger Things and Story Kitchen, with Christopher Monfette serving as showrunner.

Atlus and Sega are taking their massively popular supernatural RPG franchise to television. According to a report by Variety, Netflix is developing a live-action Persona adaptation spearheaded by production companies Story Kitchen and 21 Laps. The latter brings heavy genre credentials to the project, thanks to founder Shawn Levy, who produced Stranger Things, Deadpool and Wolverine, and Free Guy. Christopher Monfette is attached to write, executive produce, and run the show, bringing prior experience from Star Trek: Picard and Marvel Television's upcoming VisionQuest.

While the adaptation is still early in development, it highlights Netflix's ongoing push to translate major gaming intellectual property to the screen. The streamer has found massive success with animated adaptations like Arcane and Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, but live-action video game translations have proven trickier to nail. Given that Persona turns thirty years old and spans massive hits like Persona 5 alongside upcoming projects like Persona 4 Revival, the core premise of teenagers balancing mundane high school lives with otherworldly dungeon crawling gives creators plenty of rich material to adapt.

For players who have spent decades watching the franchise evolve from a niche Shin Megami Tensei spinoff into a global cultural phenomenon, seeing the series make the jump to live-action television is a major milestone. As production gets underway, the community will undoubtedly be watching closely to see how faithfully the signature style, social sim mechanics, and supernatural battles translate outside of our consoles and PCs.
