Netflix Is Bringing Persona to Life With a Live-Action Adaptation

Netflix is reportedly developing a live-action television series based on the Persona franchise, with Star Trek: Picard writer Christopher Monfette attached as showrunner and production backing from Story Kitchen and 21 Laps.

Atlus and Sega are expanding their massive RPG franchise beyond consoles and PC. According to a recent report from Variety by Fran Ruiz at Eurogamer, Netflix is currently developing a live-action television series based on the Persona universe. The project is a collaborative effort bringing together production heavyweights 21 Laps and Story Kitchen, with Christopher Monfette, known for his work on Star Trek: Picard and 9-1-1, attached as the showrunner.

Story Kitchen has become a familiar name in the gaming adaptation space, having found major success with the Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise while also driving upcoming projects like the Tomb Raider series. They are joined by Sega executive Toru Nakahara alongside producers from 21 Laps including Shawn Levy, Dan Levine, and Robert Atwood. While Netflix has not yet officially commented on the exclusive report, the creative team brings plenty of pedigree to the table.

Turning a sprawling, stylized JRPG into live-action is always a polarizing prospect for the community. Netflix has experienced both massive wins and painful missteps when adapting beloved properties, with successes like One Piece proving that careful execution can win over skeptical fans. With Persona 4 Revival and Persona 6 already keeping the community busy, this new adaptation will need to capture the distinct style and social mechanics that make the games so special if it hopes to win over an intensely passionate fanbase.
