Netflix is preparing to release Steps, an animated feature that reimagines the Cinderella story by focusing on the misunderstood stepsister and challenging traditional fairy tale tropes.
Netflix is expanding its animated slate with Steps, a fresh take on classic fairy tale tropes that shifts the spotlight away from traditional royalty. Co-directed by Alyce Tzue and Raya and the Last Dragon co-director John Ripa, the film follows Cinderella's misunderstood stepsister Lilith, voiced by Ali Wong. After a botched attempt to secure some magic for herself, Lilith accidentally turns her sister into a frog, kicking off an unexpected journey that forces the traditional villains to become the heroes.
According to Polygon, the project draws from a global tapestry of Cinderella folklore, pulling in elements from Chinese and Italian variations to build a richer narrative world. The creative team leaned heavily into diverse character designs and a French Rococo aesthetic to challenge narrow beauty standards found in older animated classics. Alongside Wong, the voice cast features Amanda Seyfried as Cinderella, Stephanie Hsu as the frog-transformed sister Margot, and Bette Midler as the Fairy Godmother.
The creative team is also leaning into themes of empathy and systemic insecurity, contrasting the rigid pastel conformity of the kingdom with bolder visuals as characters explore the outside world. While the film shares thematic DNA with modern ensemble hits like Frozen, the directors are carving out their own identity with a music-heavy approach featuring both original tracks and licensed needle drops. Following the massive streaming success of Kpop Demon Hunters, Netflix is positioning Steps as its next major animated release when it arrives on November 20.
