Netflix is launching an exclusive, microtransaction-free FIFA game developed by Delphi Interactive on June 11, utilizing cloud streaming and mobile controls to bring accessible soccer to a broader audience during the World Cup.
For years, mainstream soccer titles have leaned heavily into dense menus, complex tactical controls, and aggressive monetization models that can alienate casual fans. According to a hands-on preview by Giovanni Colantonio at Polygon, Netflix is stepping in to change that dynamic with a new officially licensed game titled FIFA World Cup. Launching on June 11 as a Netflix exclusive, the project aims to strip away the friction of modern sports gaming by offering a streamlined, pick-up-and-play live service experience accessible directly through the Netflix app via cloud streaming.
The game is developed by Delphi Interactive, the studio behind the pitch for 007 First Light, which successfully secured the FIFA rights following the organization's high-profile split from EA in 2022. When the Launch Edition drops, it will feature all 48 FIFA teams with up-to-date rosters across three core modes: Kick-off, Tournament, and Penalty Shootout. Notably, the game completely skips traditional microtransactions, instead using an in-game economy where players earn upgrade coins simply by playing matches and completing daily challenges.
Control accessibility is the core philosophy here, with the game designed to be played entirely on a smartphone. The interface divides the screen into a movement joystick on the left and a versatile touch pad on the right for passing, sprinting, and swiping for shots on goal, adopting a philosophy reminiscent of Wii Sports. With Netflix planning to treat the title as a long-term live service with ongoing roster updates and new modes, this release represents a fascinating new frontier for both sports entertainment and platform-based gaming.
