NetEase Piracy Title Sea of Remnants Struggles to Find Its Identity After Summer Game Fest Hands-On

A hands-on preview of NetEase's Sea of Remnants reveals a wildly confused live-service title that awkwardly mashes open-world sailing, roguelite elements, and turn-based gacha combat together.
Summer Game Fest brought plenty of heavy hitters to our screens, but NetEase brought a fair amount of confusion with Sea of Remnants. According to Tomas Franzese over at Polygon, the game's initial showcase relied on a bizarre music video rather than actual gameplay, and our first hands-on impressions suggest the marketing department had good reason to hide what the project actually is. After spending roughly forty-five minutes with the title, the core problem is that Sea of Remnants is trying to be everything to everyone, mashing open-world sailing, roguelite mechanics, visual novel dialogue, and turn-based gacha systems into a single sprawling package.
The resulting experience is a whiplash-inducing ride. The opening tutorial jumps from a quiet, meditative rowing sequence straight into an unwinnable giant sea monster boss fight, a custom character creation screen, and a modern scientist lab. Once players finally reach the main hub of Orbtopia, they are treated to a mix of open exploration, chicken chasing, and traditional turn-based RPG combat that will feel instantly familiar to anyone who plays modern anime gacha titles. It is a wildly ambitious blend that awkwardly tries to court fans of both traditional open-world pirate sandboxes and high-end mobile character collectors.
Adding to the sheer scale of the project, the final release is reportedly slated to feature over four hundred collectible crew members unlocked through a gacha system, alongside a narrative delivered through everything from high-budget cinematics to visual novel text boxes. While we always appreciate developers swinging for the fences, throwing every current live-service trend into one sea does not automatically make a cohesive journey. As we look ahead to its eventual release, NetEase will need to do some serious heavy lifting to prove that this chaotic mix of mechanics can actually stay afloat.
