My Hero Academia creator Kohei Horikoshi has returned with Quit Laughing, Shijima, a brand new horror-romance one-shot now available in English for free on the Shonen Jump app.
Following the emotional conclusion of the My Hero Academia anime and manga, creator Kohei Horikoshi is officially back with a massive change of pace. According to a report by Polygon, Horikoshi has just released a brand new 61-page standalone horror and romance story titled Quit Laughing, Shijima. The one-shot is available to read for free right now in English on the Shonen Jump app and website following its recent debut in Weekly Shonen Jump.
The story steps away from the superhero action of UA High to follow a high school student named Azumi who has a crush on his upperclassman, Shijima, known for her vibrant personality. Naturally, things quickly take a dark turn rather than playing out as a standard romantic comedy. This project marks Horikoshi's first major work for Shonen Jump since My Hero Academia wrapped up its historic run in 2024, proving that the creator is eager to stretch his artistic muscles in entirely new directions after years of dominating the shonen space.
For fans who spent the last couple of years watching Horikoshi drop stunning illustrations online while joking about his unemployed status, this release is a welcome surprise. While it is currently a one-shot rather than a full series, the project has already ignited major discussion across manga communities regarding what the creator might tackle next for his eventual return to serialization.
