Moss Developer Polyarc Shuts Down Following Failed Studio Pivot

Polyarc has shut down its operations just two months after releasing a non VR version of its beloved mouse adventure series Moss, ending a twelve year run in the industry.

Polyarc, the studio behind the critically acclaimed Moss adventure series, has announced it is shutting down just two months after releasing a non VR version of its games. According to a company update shared on LinkedIn by the developer, the team is ending active development and saying farewell after nearly twelve years in the industry. The studio thanked its community for the privilege of bringing surprise and delight to players over the years while sharing a contact spreadsheet to help displaced staff find new roles across the industry.

Founded in 2015, the studio originally made its mark with 2018's Moss, a charming VR puzzle adventure starring a mouse named Quill, followed by a well received sequel in 2022. The team also attempted to expand the universe into competitive multiplayer with Glassbreakers: Champions of Moss, before releasing The Forgotten Relic in July to strip away the VR requirement entirely. Unfortunately, neither the multiplayer spin off nor the flat screen port managed to generate the commercial traction needed to keep the studio afloat in an increasingly tough market.

This closure highlights the ongoing financial realities facing mid sized independent developers, especially those rooted in early VR ecosystems trying to pivot toward broader audiences. While virtual reality never reached the explosive mainstream heights that early investors hoped for, Polyarc managed to carve out a genuinely beloved corner of gaming history and deliver memorable experiences for players across multiple generations of hardware. Our thoughts go out to everyone affected by the shutdown as they navigate this difficult transition.
