Mortal Shell 2 Introduces Adaptive Difficulty That Reacts to Your Death Count

Mortal Shell 2's latest update adds an experimental adaptive difficulty mode that scales enemy strength up or down based on your survival rate.
Cold Symmetry is rolling out a substantial new update for Mortal Shell 2, and the headline feature is an experimental adaptive difficulty mode. As detailed in a recent developer blog on Steam, the game now dynamically scales enemy strength based on your performance. If you are tearing through encounters without dying, enemies gain increased health, damage, and break resistance, pushing the challenge well beyond the standard baseline. Conversely, struggling players will see foes weaken, and the update even introduces a damage cap to prevent full health bars from being wiped out by a single blow.
Alongside the dynamic challenge scaling, the patch introduces helpful quality of life improvements for those deep in the trenches. You can now apply status effects to enemies while they recover from a riposte, opening up new tactical windows in combat. The team has also adjusted Gloom drop logic to make recovering your lost resources much less punishing upon death, complemented by the usual round of performance tweaks and bug fixes.
While the new adaptive system currently lacks a visual UI indicator to let you know how angry or merciful the game is making your opponents, Cold Symmetry plans to add visual cues in a future patch. It is a fascinating approach to single player balance, keeping veteran soulslike fans on their toes while ensuring a smoother path forward for players who just want to experience the world without hitting a brick wall.
