The new trailer for Mortal Kombat 2 hints at a brutal end for the controversial film-original character Cole Young on the iconic Dead Pool stage.
When the 2021 Mortal Kombat film introduced Cole Young, the reaction from the community was immediate and divisive. Longtime fans of the fighting game franchise bristled at an original cinematic character taking the primary protagonist slot from classic roster staples like Liu Kang. Even so, actor Lewis Tan is officially returning for the upcoming sequel, though his screen time might be violently cut short if recent footage is any indication. IGN South Africa recently highlighted details from the new Mortal Kombat 2 trailer, which suggests Young is heading toward a very painful end.
In the trailer, Young faces off against the formidable Shao Kahn in a sequence that instantly triggers nostalgia for longtime arcade and console players. The camera adopts a classic side-on perspective, showcasing what appears to be the legendary Dead Pool stage complete with its signature hazards. Framing the action this way is a fun nod for fans who spent hours mastering combos on that exact stage, but it also heavily implies that Young is about to suffer a classic, franchise-appropriate fatality.
Of course, death in a fighting game universe rarely sticks, leading to widespread speculation among fans about whether Young will stay down or return in a completely different form. Whether this encounter serves as an early narrative pivot to hand the spotlight back to legacy characters or sets up a wild resurrection twist, it shows the filmmakers are leaning into what the community loves about the source material. We will have to wait for the full release to see if Young gets a redemption arc or simply becomes background decoration for one of Shao Kahn's best finishes.
