Mortal Kombat 2 hits VOD with plenty of brutal fights and fan service, leading a weekend streaming lineup that also includes new animation from Netflix and genre thrillers.
If you are looking to balance out your weekend gaming sessions with some screen time on the couch, a fresh wave of movie releases has just hit streaming services and VOD platforms. Polygon details the weekend slate, which features everything from bloody fighting game adaptations to creative animation and genre thrillers. For anyone deep into the fighting game community, the biggest draw is undoubtedly the arrival of Mortal Kombat 2 on VOD. The sequel brings Karl Urban into the mix as Johnny Cage, dropping the washed up action star straight into the high stakes interdimensional tournament alongside a massive roster of aliens, cyborgs, and zombies.
Reviews highlight that the film leans hard into what fans want, trading slow pacing for relentless action sequences and creative nods to the source material. One standout fight takes place on a narrow platform over acid, directly mimicking the iconic Dead Pool stage from the games while staging the combat in a classic 2D perspective. If you spent your week grinding ranked matches in your favorite fighting titles, watching the cinematic equivalent of a flawless victory offers a solid way to unwind.
Beyond the arcade carnage, streaming platforms have plenty of variety for cross-platform players and digital natives looking for a good watch. Netflix is rolling out some heavy hitters in the animation space, including I Am Frankelda, Mexico's first stop motion feature film backed by Guillermo del Toro, and Scarlet, an ambitious anime take on Hamlet from director Mamoru Hosoda. Horror fans can also check out the conclusion of The Strangers trilogy on Starz or dive into new genre fare like The Virgil. You can read the full breakdown over at Polygon.
