Director Adam Wingard shifts from the MonsterVerse to grindhouse sci-fi horror with Onslaught, blending low-budget exploitation thrills with high-end Hollywood craftsmanship.
Fresh off helming blockbuster battles for the MonsterVerse, director Adam Wingard is shifting gears into much bloodier territory with his upcoming sci-fi horror feature, Onslaught. The film follows a single mother fighting for survival against zombified super-soldiers unleashed on a trailer park by a rogue scientist. Speaking with Polygon, Wingard explained that the project is designed to deliver a classic grindhouse B-movie thrill while utilizing a polished, modern production sheen.
The director leaned heavily on cinematic inspirations ranging from Quentin Tarantino's distinctive soundtrack curation to John Carpenter's atmospheric synthesizer scores. Matthew Pusti provided the pulse-pounding score for Onslaught, even salvaging a discarded track originally composed for Mechagodzilla during Wingard's time in the director's chair for Godzilla vs. Kong. Beyond the technical score work, Wingard utilized lessons in budget management learned from massive franchise productions to maximize the impact of Onslaught's lean twenty-five million dollar budget.
Narratively, the film digs into the dark history of Operation Paperclip, examining the real-world fallout of the United States absorbing former Nazi scientists after World War II. Frequent collaborators Dan Stevens and Rebecca Hall round out the cast, bringing unexpected dynamic choices to their roles that elevate the movie into a darkly comedic and unhinged territory. Onslaught arrives in theaters on September 4, offering audiences a rare blend of high-craft filmmaking and nasty retro exploitation style.
