Modders Bring Grand Theft Auto 5 to Nintendo Switch Hardware

A dedicated group of modders has successfully ported Grand Theft Auto 5 to run natively on the Nintendo Switch, though the hardware limitations result in choppy framerates and heavy battery drain.

Grand Theft Auto 5 has finally arrived on Nintendo hardware, though not through any official channel from Rockstar Games. As reported by GameRant, a dedicated group of modders has managed to get the massive open-world title running natively on the standard Nintendo Switch. Unlike previous cloud streaming solutions, this fan-made port executes directly on the console architecture, marking a technical milestone for a game that originally launched back in 2013.

While the achievement is undeniably impressive from a technical standpoint, the actual playability leaves a lot to be desired for everyday sessions. Performance hovers between 10 and 25 frames per second under normal clock speeds, while aggressive overclocking only manages to stabilize parts of the experience at 30 frames per second. Such fluctuating framerates make high-intensity gunfights and fast-paced driving sections genuinely punishing, while also taking a heavy toll on handheld battery life.

This fan project highlights the incredible lengths communities will go to bridge hardware gaps, especially as players await the next generation of the franchise. Rockstar previously brought the Definitive Edition trilogy to the platform, but GTA 5 remained a notable absentee. For now, this mod stands as a fascinating curiosity rather than a practical way to experience one of the best-selling games in history.
