Modder Learns the Hard Way After Taunting Rockstar Over Unofficial Switch Port

An independent modder who publicly challenged Rockstar Games to stop an unofficial Nintendo Switch port of GTA 5 quickly folded after receiving a cease and desist from Take-Two Interactive.

A modder who set out to bring Grand Theft Auto 5 to the Nintendo Switch has officially called it quits after a swift legal warning from Take-Two Interactive. Operating under the name Mojso, the developer was working on unofficial versions of both the single-player experience and GTA Online for modified hardware. Following the release of updated modding guidelines from Rockstar that explicitly banned porting projects, the developer publicly challenged the studio on social media with a bold invitation to try and stop them.

Despite warnings from the community about Take-Two's aggressive legal history regarding copyright protection, the modder initially brushed off the concerns by pointing to their location in Serbia. However, the confidence was short-lived. Just days after the public taunt, the project's Discord server vanished, and a formal cease and desist letter arrived shortly after. Mojso quickly changed tune, thanking the publisher for leniency and confirming the immediate cancellation of the project to avoid a costly courtroom battle.

This unauthorized project was built using assets from previous source code leaks, which have continued to cause headaches for Rockstar alongside scrapped expansion plans and early mapping materials. While the modding scene often pushes hardware to creative new limits, poking a multi-billion dollar publisher with an explicit challenge remains a quick way to bring any passion project to an abrupt halt.
