The Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway trilogy is officially continuing with a new trailer for its sequel, offering a grounded sci-fi entry point for newcomers and fans alike.
For anyone who has ever stared at the sprawling, decades-long timeline of the Gundam franchise and wondered where to start, the answer might finally be clear. Four years after the release of Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway, Polygon reports that the trilogy is finally moving forward with a newly dropped trailer for its sequel, Mobile Suit Gundam: Hathaway - The Sorcery of Nymph Circe. Director Shukou Murase is returning to helm the next chapter, which continues the story of Hathaway Noa as he leads the anti-establishment resistance group Mafty against the authoritarian Earth Federation. Set in the core Universal Century timeline, the upcoming film promises to lean even further into the complex political friction and moral grey areas that made the first installment such a standout hit.
What made the 2021 film work so well for modern audiences, especially those without a encyclopedia's worth of mecha lore in their heads, is its willingness to strip away tired tropes in favor of grounded geopolitics and genuine character interiority. Rather than relying solely on flashy mech designs to sell tickets, the film grounds its spectacle by showing the terrifying, visceral reality of combat from the perspective of helpless civilians caught in the crossfire. It treats its audience with respect, opting for a mature examination of systemic corruption and rebellion that connects just as easily with streaming-era sci-fi fans as it does with lifelong anime veterans.
The sequel arrives as the franchise continues to enjoy a broader cultural resurgence, finding a comfortable home among cross-platform players and digital-native entertainment consumers who appreciate deep sci-fi worldbuilding. As the saga prepares to ramp up the tension with Hathaway's planned air raid on the Adelaide conference and his complicated dynamic with passenger Gigi Andalusia, newcomers have a rare window to jump into one of anime's most influential universes.
