Milestone is Throwing Out the Rulebook to Bring Back Screamer

Veteran racing studio Milestone is reviving its 1995 cult classic Screamer as a wild, anime-inspired arcade combat racer, dropping real-world licenses in favor of twin-stick drifting, active-reload shifting, and an RPG-style story mode.

For decades, developer Milestone has been a reliable workhorse of the racing genre, quietly shipping licensed titles like MotoGP, Ride, and MXGP while occasionally handling massive hits like Hot Wheels Unleashed. That success allowed the Milan-based studio to hunt down the rights to its own 1995 cult classic, Screamer, finally freeing itself from the rigid boundaries of real-world vehicle licenses. Speaking with Polygon, Milestone development and creative director Michele Caletti explained that the team wanted to fill a gap in the market for something genuinely new, rather than contributing to another sea of hyper-realistic track racers that all start to look identical on YouTube comparison videos.

The result is a radical reinvention that leans into an anime-inspired, narrative-led arcade combat racer packed with overlapping mechanics. Screamer features a story mode heavily influenced by Japanese role-playing games and fighting games, complete with animated cut-scenes and a full cast of characters. On the track, players have to grapple with twin-stick drifting where steering and drifting are mapped to separate thumbsticks, active-reload gear shifting inspired by Gears of War, and a dual-meter Echo system that manages boosts, shields, and offensive moves.

While the story mode takes its time introducing these systems piece by piece, jumping straight into quick races can quickly tie your fingers in knots. The studio is taking a massive gamble here, especially considering that niche mechanics like twin-stick drifting have historically struggled to find a mainstream audience. Even so, it is hard not to respect a veteran team throwing off the shackles of corporate IP to build something completely chaotic and entirely their own.
