Microsoft Says "Thriving" After Layoffs – More AI, Less Jobs, Same Old Tune?

Microsoft claims it's "thriving" despite recent layoffs, doubling down on AI and leaving some gaming projects in the dust – is this the future we want, or just a corporate song and dance?

Right, so Microsoft's CEO Satya Nadella just dropped a statement about how the company is, apparently, "thriving." This comes hot on the heels of 9,000 employees getting the boot earlier this month. Now, I'm no expert, but that sounds less like "thriving" and more like… well, you get the picture.

According to Eurogamer, Nadella acknowledged the layoffs (good start, I suppose) and thanked those who left for their contributions. You know, the usual corporate speak. He then goes on to talk about how Microsoft is doing *so* well – market performance, strategic positioning, the whole shebang. They're even investing more in capital expenditures than ever before. Sounds fantastic, right?

Here's the kicker: Nadella says Microsoft is doubling down on AI. Security, quality, and AI transformation are the new Holy Trinity. He envisions a future where everyone can build their own tools, shifting Microsoft from a “software factory to an intelligence engine.” Ambitious, to say the least. But what does that actually *mean* for us gamers?

He also touched on company culture, praising the "growth mindset" – being a "learn-it-all, not a know-it-all." Fair enough. He even compared this period to the early '90s, when PCs became a household staple. "That’s exactly where we are now with AI," he reckons. Blimey.

Nadella claims that years from now, we’ll all look back and say, "That's when I learned the most. That's when I made my biggest impact." I sincerely hope so for the remaining Microsoft employees. But it's hard to ignore the elephant in the room – or rather, the nine thousand elephants that just got asked to leave the zoo.

Eurogamer also pointed out some projects got the chop, including Rare's Everwild, The Initiative's Perfect Dark reboot, and a new ZeniMaz MMORPG. Ouch. Apparently, roughly 200 staff from Candy Crush developer King were laid off and *replaced by the very AI tools they helped build*. Talk about irony. And allegedly, the team at Turn 10 Studios (Forza Motorsport) is "no more." (Still waiting on official confirmation on that one!). Romero Games also saw funding cuts. It's a proper bloodbath, innit?

Chris Tapsell at Eurogamer put it best: creative industries are human ones, driven by human urges. And those urges often clash with the “horrifying inhumanity” of the folks running the show. Strong words, but difficult to argue with, eh?

So, Microsoft's thriving… or at least, that's what they want us to think. But replacing human creativity with AI? That's a gamble, mate. Let's see if it pays off. (I'm not holding my breath, though.)
