Miami Beach narrowly approved a multi-million dollar marketing partnership with Rockstar Games for GTA 6, sparking local debate over game violence and municipal funding.
The City of Miami Beach has officially greenlit negotiations for an upcoming Rockstar Games marketing campaign, paving the way for GTA 6 branding to hit local beaches in exchange for a multi-million dollar payout. Reported initially by Eurogamer, the approval came down to a narrow 4-3 vote following sharp divisions among commissioners over the franchise's violent reputation and its alignment with local government messaging.
Under the currently proposed terms, the campaign is set to run from October 15 through the end of the year, utilizing Boucher Brothers beach furniture to display the iconic Roman numeral VI or the Vice City moniker rather than full franchise titles. City officials estimate the total package will bring in roughly four million dollars in municipal benefits, funding critical community efforts like the currently unfinanced Flamingo football field renovation project. Meanwhile, parallel talks are reportedly underway to feature massive promotional signage on the roof of the Kaseya Center.
Despite the financial upside, the partnership faced fierce pushback from local leadership. Commissioner David Suarez voiced strong opposition during the meeting after playing footage from the game, arguing that no amount of money justifies associating the city brand with virtual crime and police chases. Local law enforcement figures also questioned the message sent by a government body promoting a fictional universe built around illicit activity, highlighting the ongoing friction between blockbuster gaming culture and public administration.
