Metro 2039 Is Forging a Sharp, Uncompromising Vision Out of Real Conflict

Developed in Ukraine amid ongoing conflict, Metro 2039 shifts the franchise toward a stark, uncompromising look at authoritarianism and the real human cost of war.

Development on Metro 2039 has been unlike almost any other project in modern gaming history. Built primarily in Ukraine by 4A Games while the team lives through the ongoing Russian invasion, the upcoming shooter tackles themes of tyranny and survival with a stark urgency that changes the tone of the franchise entirely. Executive producer Jon Bloch notes that while previous entries focused on preventing war through abstract, grey moral choices, living through active conflict for years has forced the studio to abandon ambiguity in favor of a much clearer, more direct stance against authoritarianism.

This shift in perspective is reflected directly in the narrative and design. For the first time in the series, the protagonist is fully voiced, allowing the writing team—which includes exiled author Dmitry Glukhovsky—to deliver explicit commentary on the human cost of power. The story follows a new underground threat governed by a brutal totalitarian regime called the Novoreich, pushing players into an experience that feels considerably more claustrophobic and pressing than past outings. Co-creative director Pawel Ulmer explains that preventing war is no longer a theoretical topic for the team, turning the game's exploration of propaganda and the cult of war into something deeply personal.

Despite the extraordinary daily challenges of rolling power outages and drone strikes, the team at 4A Games is channeling that reality into a title that stands as a testament to creative resilience. Early previews highlight haunting vignettes of underground survival that balance grim tension with moments of genuine community defiance against the harsh surface world. Set for release in February 2027 across PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S, Metro 2039 looks to deliver high-end action backed by a genuine perspective on what happens when a society breaks down under the weight of tyranny.
