Meta Launches Pocket, a Generative AI Game Creation App, Following Major Studio Cuts

Meta has released Pocket, a generative AI app for creating and sharing micro-games via text prompts, following a wave of studio closures and layoffs within its Reality Labs division.
Meta is officially pushing further into generative AI with the launch of Pocket on the Google Play Store, an application designed to let users build and share micro-games and interactive gizmos simply through text prompts. The platform is the direct result of Meta acquiring Atma Science Inc., an AI startup founded by former Snapchat staff that previously found viral success with a similar app called Gizmo. Featuring a short-form video feed reminiscent of TikTok, Pocket allows players to swipe through, interact with, and comment on community-generated creations without needing any traditional coding knowledge.
This generative AI pivot arrives amid a turbulent period for Meta's broader gaming division. Earlier this year, the company executed massive layoffs and studio closures under Reality Labs, shutting down teams like Ready at Dawn, Sanzaru Games, and Twisted Pixel while scaling back its traditional VR game development. With billions poured into Reality Labs over recent years, the shift toward lightweight, user-generated AI content signals a distinct change in strategy away from high-budget interactive projects and toward automated social feeds.
For players and creators, this release raises familiar questions about the balance between automated novelty and sustainable creative work. While tools that lower the barrier to entry for game design have merit, the timing of the app alongside steep cuts to established studios leaves many in the community skeptical about Meta's long-term commitment to traditional gaming. As platforms increasingly embrace prompt-based content, the real test for Pocket will be whether it fosters genuine community creativity or simply floods app stores with transient noise.
