Menace Reworks Cyborg Factions and Scraps Unpopular Promotion Penalties

Menace is overhauling its cyborg Construct faction and removing its frustrating promotion tax in an upcoming update detailed by Rock Paper Shotgun.
The upcoming update for the gritty mercenary tactics game Menace is making some major adjustments to how players manage their squads and engage with enemy forces. Developed by Overhype and reported by Rock Paper Shotgun, the patch hits beta testing ahead of its planned April 22 release. One of the most welcome changes for players is the removal of the promotion tax, a system that added an escalating supply surcharge every time a character was promoted. Developers admitted that the mechanic often made progression feel like a punishment rather than a reward, disrupting carefully planned loadouts for upcoming missions.
To balance out the removal of the tax, Overhype is restructuring squad supply costs and adjusting how promotion points scale based on character star levels. Beyond economy tweaks, the update introduces quality of life improvements like giving all troops the ability to clear away burning vehicle hulks, which should help open up cramped urban maps. The standout feature of the update, however, is a massive overhaul to the Construct enemy faction, designed to give the cybernetic horrors much more distinct tactical roles on the battlefield.
The Construct faction revamp trades out old mechanics for more specialized combat behaviors. Construct Drones now scream upon death to trigger morale penalties in nearby units, while Construct Soldiers drop their rocket attacks in favor of heavy repeaters that excel at shredding armor. Guncrawlers gain new rocket launchers and a scanner skill, and Shamblers now boast an increased attack range while remaining walking explosives. Coupled with a disgusting texture rework to emphasize their dead human origins and a mysterious new Master Unit, these changes give the tactical sandbox a much-needed injection of variety and style.
