Polygon breaks down the deep lore and recurring villainy of the fictional conglomerate Roxxon, following its latest appearance in the Disney Plus series Wonder Man.
Marvel's favorite fictional mega corporation is back to its old tricks. In a recent report by Polygon, Sam Nelson breaks down how the notorious energy giant Roxxon serves as the catalyst for trouble in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, most recently making waves in the Disney Plus series Wonder Man. While the show largely keeps its narrative grounded and separate from sprawling multiverse stakes, its standout fourth episode dives headfirst into the chaotic consequences of Roxxon's shady corporate footprint.
Episode 4 introduces DeMarr Davis, a bouncer who gains the bizarre ability to turn his body into a literal door after interacting with strange sludge leaking from a Roxxon dumpster. It is a classic Marvel origin story with a messy corporate twist, echoing how characters like Cloak and Dagger secured their powers through a disastrous explosion at a Roxxon extraction facility back in 2018. For long time fans, this is familiar territory. Roxxon has served as a reliable emblem of unchecked corporate greed in Marvel Comics since 1974, evolving from a standard corrupt enterprise into a literal monster led by the minotaur CEO Dario Agger in recent comic runs.
Within the MCU, the conglomerate's fingerprints stretch everywhere. From the oil tanker plot in Iron Man 3 and dangerous weapons research in Agent Carter to forcing Matt Murdock and Foggy Nelson to walk away from corporate law in Daredevil, Roxxon always spells trouble. In Wonder Man, the fallout from DeMarr gaining his powers eventually leads to a disastrous movie set accident involving Josh Gad and a blanket industry ban on superpowered actors. It is a wild ride that proves corporate negligence in the MCU always leaves a trail of ruined lives in its wake.
