Marvel Rivals Season 9.5 Update Trims Massive Chunks From Your SSD

The upcoming Season 9.5 update for Marvel Rivals slashes install sizes by 15GB on consoles and 40GB on PC through a massive texture compression overhaul, according to Eurogamer.

Storage space is becoming a luxury item in modern gaming, which makes the latest announcement from the Marvel Rivals team a massive win for everyone's hard drives. According to a report by Eurogamer, the upcoming Season 9.5 update is set to dramatically shrink the game footprint across both PC and console platforms without cutting corners on graphical quality. Creative director Guangyun Chen detailed the overhaul in a developer update, confirming that a comprehensive texture compression process will reduce the console install size by roughly 15GB down from 73GB.

PC players are seeing an even bigger win as the game shrinks by a massive 40GB, cutting the overall footprint by over 57 percent. Chen explained that the team managed this without sacrificing a single pixel of visual fidelity. The catch is that because the developers are completely repackaging the game assets, players will need to handle a heftier download than usual when the patch goes live on August 7 in order to lock in the final lightweight install size.

This technical relief arrives at an interesting time for the hero shooter community. While Marvel Rivals remains a dominant fixture on the most-played charts for PlayStation and Xbox since its late 2024 launch, recent community sentiment on Steam has dipped to mixed following controversial UI changes and visual clutter in Season 9. Even so, saving dozens of gigabytes on crowded SSDs will certainly soften the blow as the team works to address community feedback and rolls out new content alongside the Marvel Cinematic Universe slate.
