DC Comics writer Mark Waid is co-writing the upcoming Justice League Unlimited Tabletop RPG, which launches crowdfunding in July with a strong focus on heroism, teamwork, and narrative impact over combat grinding.
Comic book legend Mark Waid is bringing his decades of DC lore expertise to the tabletop space by co-writing Justice League Unlimited: The Roleplaying Game. Developed by D20 Culture and slated to hit crowdfunding this July, the project aims to capture the grand scale and collaborative spirit of the iconic animated series and comic runs. Waid recently spoke with Polygon about joining the project, noting that his deep history with the publisher and lifelong love of tabletop gaming made it a natural fit. According to D20 Culture CEO Peterson Rodrigues, Waid's involvement has been crucial in ensuring the game stays faithful to decades of comic history while translating the Justice League into a functional roleplaying framework.
Unlike traditional tabletop RPGs that often reward aggressive combat tactics and endless looting, Justice League Unlimited intentionally shifts the focus toward heroism and community protection. Rodrigues explained that the design team wants to steer players away from standard combat loops and toward saving lives, inspiring civilians, and acting as beacons of hope. This thematic shift also solves a common balance issue in superhero games by leveling the playing field. Batman can wield the same narrative influence and strategic weight as Superman, even if his raw damage output is vastly different, allowing mixed-tier hero squads to operate as a cohesive unit.
A downloadable quickplay PDF is currently available for players wanting to test the waters, featuring a starter adventure where heroes must defend Metropolis from Cyborg Superman and Parasite. The system introduces mechanics like Editorial Points for the game master and Plot Points for players, encouraging creative storytelling and tight team synergy over raw stat optimization.
