Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has received a surprise Switch 2 update that unlocks eight-player local split-screen, faster loading times, and visual upgrades.
Nintendo has dropped an unexpected update for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, pushing the evergreen racing game into new territory with support for up to eight players in local split-screen. As reported by Eurogamer, the free patch takes advantage of newer hardware to double the previous four-player local limit. Running the game on the successor console also brings cleaner image quality, quicker loading times, and new features like GameShare and CameraPlay for smaller local sessions.
The update includes some welcome quality of life adjustments for regular players. Booster Course Pass owners can now select a massive ninety-six races option for custom versus matches, and a minor physics tweak gives every racer a slight speed boost equivalent to holding one extra coin. Additionally, the item-stealing Boo mechanic no longer slows your kart down upon activation, removing a minor frustration from competitive matches.
Nintendo has been quietly rolling out similar hardware refreshes across its catalog this week, including a performance patch for Pikmin 3 Deluxe. While eight-way split-screen on a single television might test your eyesight, it is a fun way to scale up couch multiplayer sessions without needing extra consoles or online setups.
