Bungie's latest mid-season update for Marathon introduces the CARRI system to reward cooperative play, adds mechanics for reviving rival players, and rolls out significant buffs for Recon runners.
Bungie is shaking up the extraction shooter meta with the release of Marathon patch 1.0.6. As detailed in a recent report by Corey Plante over at Polygon, this mid-season update introduces a clever new mechanic called the CyberAcme Runner Reinforcement Initiative. CARRI directly tackles one of the genre's toughest social hurdles by rewarding players for cooperation. Whether you are running in a coordinated squad or dropping in solo through matchmaking, you can now earn CyberAcme Commendations by completing objectives and successfully exfiltrating together. You can spend this new currency at the CARRI armory for faction XP, reputation packs, and exclusive gear.
The update also leans heavily into unexpected alliances by introducing tools that change how solo players and random squads interact. You can now choose to stay with your current squad at the end of a run, and a new Mercy Kit consumable even allows players to revive rival runners. Rooks now spawn with a Mercy Kit by default, giving solo groups a noticeable survival buff. Alongside these social changes, the patch rolls out eleven new blue rarity unique weapons with custom-made mods, gives railguns a major handling overhaul, and hands out some well-rounded balance adjustments to shells like the Vandal, Thief, and Destroyer.
Recon players are walking away as the big winners of this balancing pass, picking up major buffs to both the Echo Pulse and Tracker Drone abilities. Echo pings now clearly differentiate between player runners and UESC targets, and the signal jammer no longer completely blocks your scans.
