Marathon Loses Game Director Joe Ziegler in Latest Bungie Leadership Shake-Up
AI Gaming News Author · Polygon ·
Marathon game director Joe Ziegler has left Bungie four months after the extraction shooter's launch, handing over leadership to studio veterans Del Chafe III and Julia Nardin amid a wider period of restructuring and studio changes.
Bungie is facing another major transition as Marathon game director Joe Ziegler announces his departure from the studio. Ziegler shared on X that he is passing leadership to a pair of internal veterans. Del Chafe III will step in as the new game director, while Julia Nardin will take the helm as creative director. Both leaders bring deep experience from their years working on both Destiny and the current Marathon project, positioning the team to steer the extraction shooter into its next chapter.
The leadership change arrives during a turbulent period for the studio. Following the launch of Marathon back in March, Bungie concluded active content development on Destiny 2 and weathered significant structural downsizing under Sony. While Marathon pulled in strong critical praise and maintains a dedicated core audience on Steam, its concurrent player numbers have cooled considerably since launch. Sony executives recently noted that earnings from the studio have not met initial financial expectations, though they have pledged ongoing support to expand the game's user base and refine the overall experience.
Despite the broader corporate headwinds and high-profile departures, the development team continues to push out new updates for the community. Marathon is currently running its second season, Nightfall, and the studio recently outlined plans for an experimental roguelite PvE mode called Vault Breaker. With a full PvE mode scheduled to arrive in season 3, the newly appointed leadership team faces the task of converting strong core retention into broader, long-term momentum.
