Marathon Loses Game Director Joe Ziegler as Bungie Shakes Up Leadership

Marathon game director Joe Ziegler has left Bungie following recent studio layoffs and financial struggles, with veteran developer Del Chafe III stepping in to lead ongoing development.
Another major leadership shift has hit Bungie as Joe Ziegler announces his departure from the studio, stepping down from his role as game director for the sci-fi extraction shooter Marathon. Ziegler, who previously helmed development on Valorant, joined Bungie in late 2022 and took over the Marathon project in mid-2023. His final day marked the end of a turbulent period for the title, which successfully transitioned from a 90s classic into a modern multiplayer experience when it launched in March. While the game pulled in a solid 81 average on OpenCritic, strong critical praise was not enough to offset broader financial headwinds at the studio.
The departure follows a difficult stretch for Bungie and parent company Sony, which recently confirmed a massive $765 million impairment loss tied to the studio's recent underperformance. That financial pressure culminated in a round of layoffs at the end of June, leaving the community anxious about the long-term support and seasonal roadmap for the extraction shooter. For a game that relies heavily on a thriving, active player base and ongoing content drops to sustain its economy, high-level departures during the post-launch window always raise questions about internal stability.
Bungie is wasting no time passing the torch, naming longtime studio veteran Del Chafe III as the new game director alongside Creative Director Julia Nardin. Chafe brings decades of industry experience to the table, dating back to Quake mods in the late nineties, and has spent the last fifteen years climbing the ranks at Bungie while working on major expansions for Destiny and Destiny 2. With Chafe and Nardin now steering the ship, the immediate challenge will be rebuilding momentum, addressing player retention, and proving that Marathon can secure a lasting place in the current live-service landscape.
