Marathon art director Joseph Cross has left Bungie after six years on the project, just three months before the extraction shooter's scheduled launch in March 2026.
Bungie is facing another leadership shift as Marathon art director Joseph Cross confirms his departure from the studio. According to reporting by Game Rant via original coverage from Kotaku, Cross made the decision to leave the project after six years of development. His exit comes at a critical juncture for the upcoming extraction shooter, arriving just three months before the game reaches players in March 2026. Despite the timing, Cross expressed strong support for the team and the project on social media, noting that he looks forward to experiencing the final release as a player.
Cross leaves behind a distinct visual identity that has been one of the most talked about elements of the game since its initial reveal trailer. That standout aesthetic generated plenty of positive buzz across creator communities and forums, though development has not been entirely smooth. Marathon previously faced an indefinite delay following mixed playtest feedback and public scrutiny over environment art similarities. Even with those hurdles, Bungie has locked in a release date and a confirmed price point, pushing the title back into the active spotlight.
For a multiplayer extraction shooter relying heavily on community momentum, creator streaming, and sustained player engagement, stability at the top is crucial. Losing a core creative voice right before launch always raises questions, but Cross has maintained a positive outlook regarding the work accomplished by the wider team. As Bungie counts down the final weeks toward March 2026, all eyes will be on how the studio sticks the landing for one of its biggest modern bets.
