Marathon Kicks Off Season 2 With a Wipe, Free Access, and a New PvP-Lite Mode

Marathon Season 2 brings a full gear wipe, a week of free-to-play access, and an experimental PvP-lite mode called Sponsored Survival that tests player patience with extraction mechanics.

Bungie is shaking up the meta as Marathon Season 2 gets underway, bringing a complete gear wipe that resets the playing field for everyone. To draw in new players and tempt those sitting on the fence, the opening week of the season is entirely free-to-play across PC, PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Mac. The centerpiece of this launch update is a test run for a modified ruleset called Sponsored Survival, designed to lower the barrier to entry for the game's intense extraction loop.

Hosted on Night Marsh, a darker and more atmospheric variant of the classic Dire Marsh map, Sponsored Survival drops your crew into a largely isolated instance. Instead of contending with rival players right from the drop, you will deal with UESC drones and new hostile entities lurking in the shadows. The catch is an 18-minute countdown timer. Once time expires, the sole extraction point opens up, forcing players to either broker a fragile truce or betray each other for the remaining loot. According to reporting by Rock Paper Shotgun, this experimental mode is open to solos, duos, and full crews alike.

While the lower-pressure environment offers an easier onboarding ramp, community members are already questioning whether it solves the core desire for a dedicated player-versus-environment mode. Bungie has noted that a proper PvE test is slated for the second half of the season, but separating the player base across multiple queues remains a real concern for matchmaking health. As live service titles continually balance high-stakes tension with accessibility, this experiment will show how much wiggle room extraction shooters have when trying to satisfy both hardcore PvP veterans and solo scavengers.
