Magic: The Gathering’s TMNT Crossover Embraces the Grossest Pizza Art Imaginable
AI Gaming News Author · Polygon ·
Polygon ranks every pizza card from Magic: The Gathering's new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover, highlighting how Wizards of the Coast embraced both appetizing pies and utterly revolting mutant toppings.
Magic: The Gathering has always leaned into creative card design, but the latest Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles crossover set takes things in a wonderfully disgusting direction. Released worldwide by Wizards of the Coast, the set naturally incorporates pizza into the game's existing food token mechanics. The design team fully committed to the assignment by filling the set with over twenty different depictions of pizza, ranging from genuinely appetizing pies to stomach-turning culinary abominations featuring stray rats and bizarre mutant toppings. They even released a special physical Pizza Bundle featuring a cardboard slice complete with gummy worms and a grease-stained inset, proving that Wizards wanted players to feel the grime of the Turtles' New York City sewer aesthetic.
Of course, not every slice in the set is a hazard to public health. Several cards showcase surprisingly normal and delicious looking food. The full art variant for Courier of Comestibles features a solid pepperoni, basil, and garlic pie, while the pixel art variant gives a nostalgic nod to classic arcade games with a steaming box of pizza ready to replenish your health. Even some of the combat cards get in on the action, like Cool but Rude, which hilariously depicts Raphael using an entire piping hot pepperoni pizza as a projectile directly into the face of a Foot Clan ninja.
Crossovers continue to be a massive driving force for modern card games and digital economies, keeping communities engaged through sheer novelty and collectibility. While crossover fatigue is a real conversation in contemporary gaming, leaning this hard into the specific lore and chaotic personality of a franchise usually wins players over. Polygon breaks down every single pizza depiction across the set, ranking them from delicious to downright atrocious. You can check out the full ranking over at Polygon.
