Wizards of the Coast is bringing back Eminence, one of the most polarizing mechanics in Magic: The Gathering history, in the upcoming Reality Fracture set. As reported by Polygon, the ability will return through a new card called The Ur-Sphinx, which anchors the Multiverse Reforged preconstructed Commander deck. Designer Gavin Verhey previously admitted that Eminence was a mistake because it grants persistent, uncounterable benefits directly from the Command Zone without requiring the card to enter play.
The Ur-Sphinx acts as a direct counterpart to The Ur-Dragon, trading dragon-focused ramp for a strategy that mills players and lets you cast spells for free. Alongside a cost-reduction ability for sphinx spells, the card fits neatly into a polymorph strategy built around generating small tokens and swapping them for heavy hitters. Because The Ur-Dragon and Edgar Markov already rank among the most popular Commanders in the format despite their broken rules, this new addition is practically guaranteed to dominate casual tables.
The inclusion of The Ur-Sphinx in a preconstructed deck ensures that players will not need to hunt through booster packs or pay high singles prices to secure a copy. While purists might worry about power creep, the accessibility of the deck means the community will likely embrace the chaos. It is a clear reminder that sometimes player appetite for high-powered, splashy effects outweighs traditional design balance.
