Wizards of the Coast is issuing an immediate rules errata for Ashling, the Limitless, the headline commander for the upcoming Magic: The Gathering Lorwyn Eclipsed set, after players spotted a loophole involving noncreature elemental spells.
Wizards of the Coast is stepping in to adjust a prominent card from the upcoming Lorwyn Eclipsed set before players even get their hands on it. The card in question is Ashling, the Limitless, which serves as the face commander for the upcoming Dance of the Elements preconstructed deck. As originally printed, the card interacts heavily with elemental spells by granting them evoke and creating hasty copies whenever nontoken elementals are sacrificed.
The complication arose due to the return of the kindred mechanic, which applies creature types to noncreature cards. Players quickly pointed out that the current wording would theoretically allow the card to interact with kindred instant spells using evoke, creating massive rules confusion and unintended combo potential at casual tables. Principal editor Matt Tabak confirmed on Bluesky that the card will receive an official text update to restrict its abilities exclusively to elemental permanent spells.
This early adjustment highlights the long-standing design hurdles associated with the kindred mechanic, previously known as tribal. Magic head designer Mark Rosewater previously shelved the mechanic for standard-legal sets due to its inconsistency and rule complexity. While preconstructed Commander decks are vital entry points for social play and digital integration through platforms like Magic: The Gathering Arena, this situation shows how easily modern card design can bump against legacy rules.
