Wizards of the Coast is continuing Magic: The Gathering's bizarre tradition of featuring mismatched and terrifying romantic couples on the reprint of the spell Run Away Together in the upcoming Lorwyn Eclipsed set.
Card games often lean heavily on high fantasy tropes like epic sword fights and grand dragon battles, but Magic: The Gathering has quietly cultivated a much stranger recurring bit. Wizards of the Coast is bringing back the blue instant Run Away Together in the upcoming Lorwyn Eclipsed set, continuing a niche tradition of pairing deeply mismatched or downright terrifying creatures in romantic art. Originally printed in Throne of Eldraine with a human holding hands with a monstrous scarecrow, the card has since become a canvas for bizarre interspecies affection.
Players first caught on to the running gag during the Commander Legends: Battle for Baldur's Gate set, which featured a Mind Flayer and a humanoid captive sharing a tender moment surrounded by flowers. The art immediately sparked community theories and headcanons connecting the illustration to beloved characters from Baldur's Gate 3, giving the tabletop community plenty of fuel for social media and streaming discussions. It is a clever way for Wizards to inject humor and character into standard reprints without altering the functional mechanics of a cheap bounce spell.
From a player perspective, Run Away Together is a staple utility card that sees plenty of play in casual formats like Commander, where bouncing two opposing creatures for just two mana can easily disrupt an opponent's board state. By using a widely utilized card to sneak in these bizarre visual narratives, Wizards gives the community something fun to hunt for and discuss across digital deckbuilding sites and creator streams. As Lorwyn Eclipsed prepares to launch later this month, collectors and casual tables alike will be eager to see what sort of weird romance the new art brings to the table.
