Magic: The Gathering Introduces God Packs Loaded Exclusively With Rares and Mythics

Wizards of the Coast is adding God Packs to Magic: The Gathering, featuring boosters packed entirely with rares and mythics while simultaneously removing lower rarity filler slots.

Wizards of the Coast is shaking up the Magic: The Gathering card opening experience by introducing God Packs, which feature booster configurations made up entirely of rares and mythics. According to details shared in a recent official blog post, these rare drops will appear in approximately one out of every 1,000 Play Boosters and one out of every 300 Collector Boosters. Play Boosters hitting this status will contain a mix of non-foil rares, booster fun variants, and a special celebration card, while Collector Boosters will load up on foil rares and alternate art treatments. Alongside these lottery style additions, Wizards is also increasing general drop rates for foil rares and mythics across standard packs.

At the same time, these updates come with a major restructuring of pack contents. Wizards is removing foil commons and uncommons completely from Play Boosters, and trimming Collector Boosters down to 12 cards by cutting three foil filler slots. As IGN South Africa points out, while many players naturally skim past lower rarity cards during pack openings, removing them entirely could cause downstream ripples in secondary market prices for commons and uncommons that actually see competitive play. These adjustments officially kick off with Nautic: The Sunken Realm and will become the permanent standard for all in-universe sets moving forward, with Universes Beyond crossover sets adopting the new structure starting in 2028.

For TCG collectors and digital economy enthusiasts alike, pack cracking has always been about chasing that high tier pull, and these changes lean directly into that psychology. By reducing pack filler and raising the ceiling on premium hits, Wizards is catering heavily to the community's desire for immediate value and excitement. Whether these adjustments ultimately strike the right balance for competitive players and deckbuilders remains to be seen, but opening physical packs just got a lot more high stakes.
