Magic: The Gathering Drops Learn Mechanic for Secrets of Strixhaven

Wizards of the Coast has confirmed that Magic: The Gathering's upcoming Secrets of Strixhaven set will omit the popular Learn mechanic, disappointing Limited and Pauper players who relied on its deckbuilding flexibility.

Magic: The Gathering is heading back to campus, but students will be skipping class this time around. During a recent preview event covered by Polygon, Wizards of the Coast confirmed that the upcoming Secrets of Strixhaven set will not feature the fan-favorite Learn mechanic. While the set does include a handful of Lesson cards meant to represent final academic capstones or theses, the keyword itself is entirely absent from the expansion. Instead, the design team is shifting focus toward the new Prepared mechanic, which introduces some remarkably powerful effects to the format alongside distinct mechanics for each of the five magical colleges.

The omission is a notable disappointment for Limited and Pauper formats, where Learn previously served as a vital tool for deck flexibility. In the original Strixhaven: School of Mages set, the mechanic allowed players to either cycle through cards or pull specific Lesson cards from their sideboard, effectively expanding their options in 40 card Limited pools and opening up creative avenues for deckbuilding. Even though recent crossovers like the Avatar: The Last Airbender set brought new Lesson cards into the mix, players will not have access to the Learn engine needed to fetch them effectively in upcoming matches.

While losing a flexible and widely loved mechanic stings for tactical players, the introduction of the Prepared mechanic signals a fresh strategic identity for this return to school. As digital and physical card communities prepare to dive into Draft and Sealed pools, the meta will undoubtedly adapt to the shift in resource management. Head over to Polygon for the full breakdown of what to expect when Secrets of Strixhaven officially launches.
