Wizards of the Coast is bringing back the legendary and historically banned Library of Alexandria card for the upcoming Secrets of Strixhaven expansion, though the reprint will be exclusively available on MTG Arena for the digital Timeless format.
Wizards of the Coast is dusting off one of the most infamous and expensive cards in card game history for the upcoming Secrets of Strixhaven expansion. Originally printed way back in 1993 during the Arabian Nights set, Library of Alexandria has long been a holy grail for collectors. Physical copies regularly command over one thousand dollars on the secondary market, largely because the card is banned or restricted in nearly every traditional paper format. Since the new expansion centers around an academic setting, developers decided the historic library made a fitting thematic inclusion for the set's special guest card slot.
There is a major catch for physical collectors and paper purists, though. As reported by Polygon, the reprint is strictly limited to digital packs on Magic: The Gathering Arena. Players will not find this version in physical booster packs at local game stores. Instead, the card is landing directly in Arena on April 21 ahead of the global launch on April 24, where it will be fully legal for use in the platform's high power Timeless format.
For digital players and deckbuilders, this move opens up a fascinating sandbox opportunity to test a piece of trading card history without breaking the bank. While paper players might grumble about the digital exclusivity, bringing historically broken cards into curated online queues lets the community experience legendary power levels that are usually locked behind massive paywalls or banlists. It is a smart way to lean into the strengths of digital platforms while keeping paper metas stable.
