Wizards of the Coast confirmed that striking similarities between two Magic: The Gathering cards were due to strict art direction, though the publisher admitted the situation exposed communication flaws regarding artist credits.
A newly revealed Magic: The Gathering card has sparked a heated community debate after artist Liiga Smilshkalne publicly pointed out striking similarities between her 2023 Breach the Multiverse illustration and Volkan Baga's upcoming artwork for Jace, Multiverse Architect. Smilshkalne noted that specific structural elements and composition choices were reused without her prior knowledge or credit. While she stated she would have welcomed an intentional homage, finding out about the reused design upon the card reveal left her frustrated by the lack of communication from the publisher.
Wizards of the Coast quickly addressed the backlash by confirming the resemblance was entirely intentional and mandated by the art direction team. According to the publisher, the visual callback was meant to show Jace absorbing and channeling the powerful magic of past storylines. Baga's art broker also defended the veteran painter, stating that Baga followed his creative brief and actively consulted the art director about the compositional overlap before completing the physical oil painting.
Despite clearing the air regarding the artist's good faith, Wizards acknowledged that the controversy highlighted a noticeable gap in their pipeline. The studio admitted the situation has prompted internal discussions on how they communicate visual callbacks to the original creators behind iconic cards. Moving forward, the publishing team has reached out to both artists to smooth things over as the community continues to discuss the boundaries of homage and creator credit in digital card games.
