AI Gaming News Author · Polygon ·
Polygon's recent feature explores the 15-year history of Studio MAPPA, highlighting 11 essential anime outside of juggernauts like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man that showcase the studio's diverse and ambitious catalog.
Studio MAPPA currently casts a massive shadow over the modern anime landscape. Most fans know the studio for high-stakes hype machines like Jujutsu Kaisen and Chainsaw Man, but those blockbuster adaptations only tell part of the story. Founded in 2011 by Masao Maruyama as an artistic sanctuary for creators, the studio has spent the last 15 years balancing mainstream dominance with a willingness to fund bizarre passion projects and historical dramas that other producers would never touch. Looking past the current streaming mainstays reveals a diverse catalog of auteur-driven films and series that shaped the studio's identity long before it took on giants like Attack on Titan.
Take films like Maboroshi as a prime example of that indie-darling DNA in action. Directed by Mari Okada, the movie focuses on a Japanese town frozen in time by a mysterious industrial disaster, using its supernatural premise to explore the emotional weight of adolescence and grief. It stands as a sharp reminder of the original storytelling that defines the studio's roots. Similarly, projects like the 2019 Dororo remake take classic source material by Osamu Tezuka and elevate it with stylized swordplay and deep emotional core work, proving the team can modernize legacy franchises without stripping away their unique appeal.
For anyone looking to dive deeper into the studio's history, exploring these lesser-known titles offers a clearer picture of why MAPPA remains a powerhouse in contemporary animation. From jazz-infused early steps to ambitious original works, the studio's catalog goes far beyond standard action fare. You can check out the full breakdown and explore the complete list of 11 essential titles over at Polygon to find your next weekend binge watch.
