Licensed Paranormal Activity Horror Game Cancelled After Creator Parts Ways with Paramount

Paranormal Activity: Threshold is officially cancelled after solo developer Brian Clarke parted ways with Paramount following a denied request for development time.

The officially licensed Paranormal Activity game is completely dead, according to its solo developer. Brian Clarke, the creator behind the indie horror hit The Mortuary Assistant, recently spoke with Eurogamer to confirm that development on Paranormal Activity: Threshold has ceased for good. The project hit a roadblock when Clarke requested a timeline extension to properly finish the game. Because of shifting corporate structures tied to upcoming media mergers, the request went to Paramount instead of Warner Bros, and Paramount ultimately declined.

Faced with the choice of rushing out a final product he would not be proud of or walking away, Clarke chose to part ways with the publisher. While the core build of the game is finished, repurposing the found footage style mechanics into a new, non-licensed project presents a massive hurdle. Clarke noted that decoupling the design and starting fresh feels like too much heavy lifting right now, especially while dealing with burnout. Instead, he plans to focus on smaller, independent concepts that spark his interest.

Announced back in 2024, Paranormal Activity: Threshold leaned heavily into the single player cooperative horror vibe popularized by games like Phasmophobia, utilizing camcorders and spatial tracking gadgets to build rising tension. Demoed at PAX East earlier this year, the project seemed poised to capture the same eerie magic that made The Mortuary Assistant a cross-platform success on PC, consoles, and the Nintendo Switch. For now, players will have to look elsewhere for their next big interactive ghost hunting fix as Clarke steps back to recharge.
