Legend of Grimrock Co-Creator Announces Sci-Fi Imsim Reconfigure

Legend of Grimrock co-creator Antti Tiihonen has revealed Reconfigure, a System Shock-inspired puzzle RPG and FPS hybrid about a spaceship consuming itself to maintain acceleration.

Antti Tiihonen, one of the brilliant minds behind the classic dungeon crawler Legend of Grimrock, is returning with a brand new project called Reconfigure. Developed under the solo label Hapatus Ltd, this upcoming title describes itself as a puzzle RPG and first-person shooter hybrid set inside a deteriorating starship. Instead of escaping a subterranean prison, players find themselves stranded aboard a vessel whose robotic crew is actively feeding parts of the ship into the engine to maintain constant acceleration. As the lone human left on board, you must solve spatial puzzles and evade laser sentinels to stop the ship from consuming itself entirely.

Early playtest builds currently live on Steam give a glimpse into the game's mechanics, which draw clear inspiration from immersive sim classics like System Shock and Dark Forces. The environment features block-based interiors where players manipulate objects to create makeshift bridges, solve circuit puzzles, and complete power connections. High gravitational forces caused by the ship's constant acceleration prevent jumping, forcing players to rely on sturdy magnetic cubes and clever pathfinding rather than vertical mobility. Combat plays a more deliberate role, involving sluggish blaster exchanges and stealthy approaches to disable malfunctioning guard droids.

While the project is still in its early stages with noticeable frame rate quirks to iron out, the pedigree of its creator makes it one to watch for fans of intelligent level design. Tiihonen has confirmed that the final release will feature handcrafted, interconnected areas reminiscent of Legend of Grimrock 2, alongside a deeper arsenal of gadgets, drones, and narrative datapads. There is no official release date yet, but players eager to sample the atmosphere can check out the limited playtest or explore the developer's previous puzzle work in Stuffo the Puzzle Bot.
