Riot Games is launching League of Legends Classic with 60 pre-rework champions, letting active players vote on future roster additions through a new community system called The Council.
Riot Games is taking a trip down memory lane with the upcoming release of League of Legends Classic, offering a nostalgic look back at the MOBA's formative years. According to a recent report by Polygon, the standalone retro experience will launch with an initial roster of 60 champions, featuring the original 40 launch characters alongside 20 handpicked additions from the early seasons. Modern reworks and newer additions are entirely off the table, meaning players can look forward to dusting off pre-rework kits and experiencing the game as it felt over a decade ago.
Rather than relying on a traditional developer roadmap to determine future additions, Riot is handing the reins over to the community through a system called The Council. Active players will earn voting power based on their time and progression within Classic, allowing them to shape which batches of champions join the game next. Executive producer Paul Bellezza shared in an interview with Polygon that updates will arrive rapidly, bringing more than two champions per patch in grouped batches.
For veterans and players who missed out on the early days of PC gaming culture, this release offers a fascinating look at how live service ecosystems evolve. By leaning into player nostalgia while letting the community direct the revival, Riot is turning roster expansion into a collaborative event. You can read the original reporting over at Polygon.
